SISGEN – Register of Biodiversity-Related Projects (CATBIO)
The Comissão de Assessoramento Técnico em Biodiversidade (CATBIO) at the Universidade Federal do Ceará estabilishes that research projects and their respective technical teams be registered on an ongoing basis in the Sistema Nacional de Gestão do Patrimônio Genético e do Conhecimento Tradicional Associado (SISGEN). Registration is mandatory for all research involving Brazil’s genetic heritage, under penalty of a fine, to be imposed by the Ministério do Meio Ambiente.
According to current legislation, genetic heritage are defined as “information of genetic origin from plant species, animal, microbial, or other species, including substances derived from the metabolism of these living beings”. According to national regulations, associated traditional knowledge consists of “information or practice of an indigenous population, traditional community, or traditional farmer regarding the properties and direct or indirect uses associated with genetic heritage”. Researchers conducting studies that work with raw materials falling under the above terms must keep the lists of members of the research teams—including coordinators, undergraduate and graduate students, technical and administrative staff, and faculty members—up to date in the system.
